The northern long-eared and tricolored bat are endangered species in North America. These bats face extinction due to white-nose syndrome, which has killed millions of cave-dwelling bats. In winter, the disease spreads a fungal infection that makes the bats more active, burning up stored fat and killing them. Bats are significant to our ecosystem and contribute billions of dollars to the U.S.'s agriculture economy by eating insects that destroy crops.
